At this point in the movie you don't really feel sorry for Anais actor because she can give as well as take the abuse from Elena. But when Fernando arrives on the scene and begins a sexual relationship with the sexually naive and relationship-impaired Elena all hell breaks loose; especially since Elena and Fernando make love in full view of Anais (who is in the same room supposedly asleep), who pathetically sobs while Elena is losing her virginity. Tough, Heart-wrenching stuff as the scene further destroys what is left of Anais'self esteem. The girl's parents are oblivious to much of this with her mother more concerned with the moss growing on her patio and the father with his work in town.
