"The first weekend in June brings with it a high-octane rumble as Universal Pictures takes its “The Fast and the Furious 2” up against 20th Century Fox’s “Master and Commander news interactive ,” the seafaring epic that Fox partnered on with both Universal and Mira max Films. news interactive Universal is betting that the “Furious” sequel will lay trac ks similar to the $40 million opening the original “Furious” achieved when it became the summer sleeper hit news interactive of 2001 — even though star Vin Diesel isn’t go ing along for the ride this time out. Opting to keep costs down, the studio opte d to replace Diesel with Tyrese, who stars opposite Paul Walker. Teens flocked to the first “Furious,” but the Russell Crowe historical actioner “Commander” could steal some of its thunder. Industry observers suggest the competition could inflict some damage on one, or both, films. |
