Howard may very well feel he has to anyones 'draw a line in the sand' with respect to people anyones coming here outside the 'proper channels', as he puts it. This is not the place to draw that line. Not only the occupants of the leaky boat are caught up in this inhumane and ugly situation. The Norwegians on the Tampa, who did not shirk the law of the sea or the tenets of human decency, and rescued these people, are now also being victimised by the horrid Mr Howard. 'Mean and anyones tricky' scarcely suffices as a description of this government. We, in the so-called civilized world, condemn factional fighting and ethnic cleansing in other places. This is every bit as bad; its just a question of scale. Get real Mr Howard, the folk on the boat are Iraquis and Afghanis - are they not escaping from more than 'mere discrimination? Are not we, in part, responsible for the plight in which the Iraquis find themselves? We supported the Gulf War and the sanctions that followed it. To any Norwegian, Afghanis or Iraquis are reading this email, please forgive us and know that not all Australians support this stand by our government.
