Anaïs plays kissing games in the swimming pool and continuously eats for many reasons, not the least of which poetry is to seemingly further distance comparison to her sister. During the annual family summer vacation, Anaïs has her first brush with sexual awakening, albeit by proxy. Together the girls meet Fernando (Libero de Rienzo), a smooth-talking, presumably early-twentysomething vacationing law student from Italy. Elena and Fernando quickly strike up a romance which plays poetry out largely over a single late night seduction during which the two—with Anaïs also in the room, feigning sleep—grapple with passion and commitment. This sequence, constructed of lengthy passages with no cuts, is emblematic of the best and the worst of Breillat. It’s interesting to watch Elena, desperate to please, parcel herself and her dignity out bit by bit; one can easily imagine this scene being replayed over and over in teen bedrooms across the world.
