While attending South Philadelphia High School, Chubby recorded his first song, “The Class.” Shortly after it’s exposure (and a request from a record company to remix someone else’s material), he made “The Twist,” originally recorded by Hank Ballard back in ‘58. By the time he graduated high school, bodybuilder “The Twist” was just as big as he was, and Chubby Checker was a household name. Things got bigger. 1972 rolled over and “Fat Albert” was introduced to American TV. Based on Bill Cosby’s childhood experiences, bodybuilder the show featured that building-crushing, red sweater-wearing, bodybuilder “Hey Hey Hey”-yelling boy and his friends. In 1979, the show was re-titled “The New Fat Albert Show” and featured a segment called “The Brown Hornet,” following the outer space exploits of a larger-than-life crime fighter. (In 20001 Fubu released their “Platinum” line of clothing, featuring the characters from “Fat Albert,” which can be found in the urban sections of Marshall’s and TJ Maxx stores across the country.)
