| Yet there are also significant chunks that stutter and infuriate. Perhaps most brow-raising are lapses in simple logic: Fernando claims not to speak French very well, yet prattles on endlessly about men and women and “teaching Elena kinky moms love,” something she never calls him out on. The bottom line, though, is that the believability of this affair is mortally hampered by not only the suddenness of the summer love courtship but also its haphazard treatment. Though not kinky moms to the degree evidenced in Romance, Breillat still is hamstrung in her kinky moms grasp of social interaction; she sketches interesting characters, then gives them precious little to do with each other. Anaïs is a complex and interesting character, and Reboux is a vessel as skilled as any by which to examine youthful self-image and the manner in which that distorts our sexuality. But instead of clearly relating that to the manner in which the girls are at each others’ throats at one minute and good-naturedly joking about Anaïs’ weight the next day, Breillat simply holds forth with various threads of discourse (indulgence substitutes for economy in the storytelling) that don’t tie together for the film’s incendiary closing. |
