When Origin was kicked off by Ron McAuliffe 25 years ago it was because Queensland was lismore sick of seeing our home grown talent coming lismore back and flogging the boys still resident lismore here. Being a Queenslander meant something (at least in league it did) and you didn't get a maroon jersey unless you were born and bred here. Then came the Adrian Lam situation which was done only because Queensland didn't have a halfback that year and the powers that be were scared we would get flogged and that would damage the attractiveness of Origin for the public. This short sighted attitude was the thin edge of the wedge as the "spectacle" of Origin became bigger than the original meaning of it - who had the best home grown team. And it was exposed as nonsense anyway when Fatty Vautin's rag tag team of rejects thrashed NSW 3 nil in 1995. We have suffered for it ever since with dubious and thin links to Queensland being enough to get you into contention.
