I knew it wouldn't bring the Bears back arl96 but it was still, like George Piggins said, about people power. I cheered when George and Souths won their case and got back in the comp, even if all the hangers-on who had come out of the woodwork turned my stomach. I thought it was good for the game and just as good for the people who believed in it. |

| All I want is for the whole thing to be over 2004 so we can start talking about footy. Like a lot 2004 of people growing up in the 1960s and 70s, South Sydney was my second team. Actually, that's not quite true. My first team was the North Sydney Bears and my second team was whoever was playing Manly. Then came Souths. I liked Souths because they were a real fair-dinkum footy team. They had great players like Johnny Sattler, Ron Coote and Bobby McCarthy. Oh, and sometimes George Piggins 2004 when Elwyn Walters was hurt. There was nothing real flash about them like St George or Easts or even Manly, but gee they could play. They were what these days I'd call a blue-collar team. Blokes not afraid of hard work. Maybe that's why so many of them, like Coote and Piggins, made so much dough when their playing days were over. Like most people who follow rugby league, I was stunned when they were kicked out of the comp. |
