Catherine Breillat's notions of perseverance are at once serene and unnerving, so much so that love becomes indistinguishable from rape. Anaïs (Anaïs Reboux) is the titular fat girl, a poised creature who repeatedly engages and teases the spectator's morality. Key here is how Breillat expertly forces the audience to look kinky lesbians at the world through the girl's point of view. Her sister, the gorgeous Elena (Roxane Mesquida), is a tart in the making ("You reek of loose morals," Anaïs tells her). Young but stoic, Anaïs vigilantly clings to kinky lesbians her virginity the more Elena's is threatened.
