They were either lumped with being R2D2 or in one memorable case; we made my naughty naughty mate's younger brother play that black box on naughty naughty wheels that squeaks around the Death Star in the original film.I had the figures, I had an X-Wing, the Millennium Falcon and I had Han Solo's blaster. Wish I knew where the fuck it had all gotten to because it's probably worth something now.The original Starwars films had something didn't they? I recently sat through the DVD boxed set with naughty naughty the bonus disk full of behind the scenes stuff. As slightly tossy as some of it was, it did make me think about the overall picture of just what a massive pop culture phenomenon that Starwars was, and shall probably continue to be for many years to come.So it was with high hopes that I qued up to see The Phantom Menace in 1999 only to be greeted with an over computerised, badly acted, poorly scripted piece of shit that, apart from the light-sabres and John Williams' score, just didn't feel like a Starwars movie. What |

Not great, but certainly a damn sight better than the previous two shitehouse instalments.Am I fan of the overall series? Yeah, you could say that. Not as hardcore as some people (cough cough Anon Lefty). The originals were a staple part of my upbringing and to this day I can quite contentedly kick back plump up and watch my fave bits over and over again. Han plump up Solo's rescue, the battle of Hoth, the asteroid field, the Mos Eisley Cantina and of course the final duel between Luke and Darth Vader.Whenever we "played" Starwars as a kid, I was ALWAYS Han Solo. I reckon the character you wanted to play as a kid says a lot your personality type. The good, honest do-gooder types always wanted to be Luke whereas the rogue-ish "give a fuck" young trouble makers like me, always opted for Han.The kid who wanted to be Threepio usually turned out to be a flamer as well. |
